ok i have a 55 gal with a butti and a midas also a pike. This is just temporary. what my question is i know buttis and midas rip up plants. i have a piece of driftwood and i want to grow some hardy plants that will root themselves on to the drift wood and also floating plants if thats possible. Any help or suggestion if possible would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

plants from fern and anubias family are hardy plants and tastes bad for fish.
u can try water hyacinth or water lettuce for top floating gl!

I assume 2 24inch fixtures then?

Those bulbs are quite weak, when it comes to light output. They'll work, but you'll have terribly slow growth. If you are going to stick with the plants mentioned above, I don't really see much point in investing in an expensive CF or T5 HO fixture.

I would suggest you check lowes, home depot, possibly walmart for 'daylight' or 'sunshine' bulbs. It's been a while since I've checked into them, don't recall the exact name. You'll have brighter bulbs, and it will make your tank look a bit better.
