I am setting up somewhat of a biotope (but not EXACTLY right) for my pair of pikes and I will be using pool filter sand as the substrate and would like to have some plants. So will plants grown and be able to thrive in pool filter sand substrate? I have done planted tanks before but I always used Flourite Black as the substrate. Thanks in advance for any help!

Edit: Probably should have mentioned this before but I plan on having mostly crypts, anubias, melon swords and a few aponogeton sp.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to do it with pure sand, however, if you buy the plants potted you could cut the pots and have sort of a substrate place holder.

If you can do it with jsut sand I think you'll be investing in root tabs.

I grew plants in a tank with the 3M Colorquartz as substrate. It took quite awhile for the plants to take hold, but they did. You'll need to fertilize a little bit, but don't go crazy because the algae will get you!

Cool! Thanks for all the help! Fertilizing will be no problem, as I used fertilizer in my last planted tank. I will be getting all my stuff from greenleafaquariums.com I personally think they have a very good product. Thanks again for all the help.
