i just finished(i think) planting my 29 gallon. it has sand as asubstrate and i was wondering if the plants will be able to anchor down there? also, if the roots stick out of the sand will they eventually set down and hold or do i have to manually fix that?? thnx

ps: i have my tank in a indirect sunlight area and also have a cheapo topfin hood and bulb that came with the tank, sould that bee enuff for lthe 3 bundles of anachris, java moss, some grassy thing, 2 tall broadleasf planty things, and 2 shorter broad leafe planty things??? sorry bout the lack of info but the lfs sold them as bunch plants and potted plants lol. and im a total newb at the real plant thing so cant id them myself.thnx alot tho for any help

they'll survive in sand. and when the roots develop they will. though i heard bichirs tend to dig up plants and it would be o so easy in sand, if you're keeping them

my six do not dig up my plants but love to play in them and i have a sand substrate also!

If you have a fine sand it may cause some problems but if you have a corse sand it might be alright. If you really want to do a planted tank you might want to look at getting more light. The light you have is going to limit you to very low light plants. If you increase the lighting you will want to look into adding ferts and co2.

I use sand all the time but to 3 parts sand I add 1 part fine gravel gives it a bit of body have had no problems with plants growing in it. when i plant them i put a bit of lead wire round them they are now well and truly anchored in there.

And this is the right time to remove that lead from your tank again. I wouldn't leave it in there for good ...

What is the issue with leaving the lead in there? Does it poison the fish over time?

Plants do grow in sand, and you can use malaysian sandsnails to remove possible gasproblems and bring O2 to the roots.
