I started the Nitrate portion of the filter today on the 6. anybody using? Notice a difference? Yes I followed firemedics thread and was inspired.

Whats plants did you use?

Any plant, try fast growing and multiplying algae-swords-anubs pretty much any plan will serve the same purpose. I added a chamber specifically for this and works like a charm. Nitrates are 5-10ppm after a month of so of no W/Cs. Pretty sweet.

I use pothos, Lucky bamboo, and water hyacinth. They all work great but I still do weekly water changes.

I've got pothos in my set up. Hyacinth roots get ridiculous! I'm going to replace or supplement the pothos with mangroves (someone told me they work for freshwater) or bamboo.

I dont have a specific chamber for plants in my sump....just a 55g full of ceramics...where could I put some bamboo? And do I need a special light on it? Will my simple flourescent tube work?

Sounds like a good idea. You don't see freshwater refugiums that often but I am sure they work.

I put a seperate light on my sump that has a timer to match the main tank timer. I have access to mangrove but the mangrove grows so slow I think other plants will work faster. With Nitrates in mind I would assume the long roots would be great for nitrate removal. I plan on trying Bamboo and a maybe a couple others to test for long roots and nitrate levels. In answer to the flourescent lights question, my experience is that a regular flourescent will work but some bulbs are better than others. Bigger spectrum of light etc.
