For live plants, what is your lighting and Co2 eq? For plastic plants, it develops stains of algae in time, and should be rinsed periodically.
I like live plants because of the natural look it brings in the aquarium. I found a site that has some nice setups. Ooops,thought I saved the link. Need to go look for it.

although the piranha i had left my plants alone you would need plants that like really low light as p's dont do so weel with very bright light.
personally i would go for real looking fake plants.

When I started out in Fresh Water I always used Live, But then I went to Ciclids and they made a lunch of the plants. I switched over to Plastic and silk plants and they are awesome. As for the matinance on them, sure you have to do alittle more cleaning on them but the time spent is worth it. I'd suggest looking into the silk ones. they move almost like the real thing.
i only keep live plants just cuz i like the natural look. i dont have any co2 but lots of light. some live plants fish dont care to eat like cabomba, some swords, and ludwigia. i have lots of cichlids and they have never bothered any of my plants. my goldfish love to eat anacharis and duck weed.
I base plant selection on the type of fish I'm keeping. I usually go for plastic just because it's easier. With "eartheating fish" I don't bother with plants at all. Although there are some fairly realistic looking plastic plants out there, I like the look of real plants better. I would only deal with live plants if the inhabitants of the tank were angels, smaller characins etc. but that's just a personal preference. Even then, I would go with only hardy, common and easy to keep plants like anacharis. Aquascaping of any kind is always an appearance vs. maintainence vs. type of fish kept in the tank thing with me.
