I see a ton of plants on ebay that are really cheap and look like they are gorgeous species that i cant get at the lfs...

Do any of you have any experience with this? I would love to hear feed back about this. I also have a question about xmas moss. It shows that it needs a colder tank environment, but was very vague about the temp it needed to be kept at. I really think it is nice looking. Problem I have is that my tank contains cichlids and they are usually plant diggers... Are there a list of plants that would be hardy enough to withstand my fish? OK so i have tons of questions... I will also go through the posts and see if i answer some of my own questions.:)

I ordered Christmas moss & Flame Moss from Ebay. A seller named aquaticmagic or something like that. The plants were nice & grew out very well (I had bundles of it) before it all died from something I did.

The temp of the tank that had Christmas moss in it was set at 76-78. I never had a problem with it growing.

I just got some the other day...java fern from aquatic magic too. Been grabbing plants from ebay for awhile and never had problems. I suppose you should be concerned about overseas shipping though. In fact, Ive received plants while I was away and I came home after a week and the plants were still packaged in a plastic baggie. They were fine.

thank you everyone for your posts. I really want to add plants to my tank. I had bought a few a long time ago, but my parrot and pleco ate them... I also didn't educate myself with how to keep them properly. next question is. what is a good brand of not to expensive fertilizer and how to determine how to use it? And I think I read about PH levels or something effecting plants... anyone want to explain this? :P Thanks again

Eco complete or flourite imo are the best. The directions will be on the bag or you can just google the product which will give you more info. Too lazy atm to go into depth lol

I have ordered some from ebay. I forget the exact vendor but i've ordered java fern, java moss, and elodea a couple times. A LOT cheaper than my LFS. I got some java fern for like $2-3 (my LFS wants $5+ for the same quantity).

For my vendors they usually put the plants in seran wrap or in a zip lock bag. The roots are wrapped in a wet paper towel and shipped in a regular envelope. Although once i got a fern in a bubble wrap envelope.

The quality is ok, but its expected of a plant. Nothing better or worse than what I would see in my LFS or petsmart. Sometimes i could get browning leaves or crushed leaves. I just rip them off and plant the roots into my tank.

Certain plants will thrive under certain water conditions. Some require higher PH, others lower. Some require more light, others less. some require higher temps, others lower. Research what the specifics for the plants are that are best compatible with your tank paramters AND fish. Google is a good source.

I personally get java ferns because they're super hardy and have a large range of water parameter and light tolerance. Also, not many fish seem to want to eat fern.

Aquatic Magic is a great seller (I have also had really good experiences with them and their customer service), but I would't really consider them a true ebay seller. They have their own site which you can go to and just do online ordering.
The best and cheapest fertilizer is dry fertilizer you measure out and mix yourself. Green Leaf Aquariums has all the dry fertilizers you need. You can get premade fertlizers by Seachem, Root Medic, and the like if you would rather not be bothered with measuring.
