Hi all... turns out my well water here at the house kicks butt for growing a few different types of plants with minimal/no algae, etc.

So I'm thinking of setting up a few outdoor tanks to grow plants in to trade to LFS for credit, etc.

Are there temp ranges for plants? Any such thing as too cool or too hot? I'm in N Florida, so freezing isn't really an issue except in dec/january...

In order to be able to make any money, you will either need to use just pond plants which will be fairly undemanding, or setup a full system planted tank. What makes your watter "kick butt" for plants? Minimal - no algae is not something that is effected by the water completely. You are probably low in phosphates. For the plants that an aquarium shop is going to want that are not pond plants, you will have to get plants that are very easy to grow, fairly undemanding, unless your LFS has a really nice plant setup. CO2, good ferts, and a good set of lights will cause the plants to grow extrodinarily fast. Even so, you will be lucky to clip once a week on most plants. I get anywhere from $1-$3 for plants, but I also raise some pretty hard to acquire plants. Most of the common plants are going to fetch <$1. These plants that are sold to aquariums shops are going to be tropical, and thus will need a heated tank.

Shoulda been more specific. No phosphates, etc. Even with 2w/gal for 14hrs or so a day I have *no* algae, and my java moss and java fern are kicking butt. I'm just thinking that if there are no real temp worries for plants then I may have a shot of talking the wife into letting me plan a slightly large pond off the back patio :)

BTW my water comes via well here in N Florida - Ginne Springs (and others) are just a few miles from me....
