Plants used in sump fillter systems

It would depend on your sump design, but yes, they can be used.

Lots of plants can be used in a sump. Anything that can handle the rate of flow. Moss balls are my favorite in this situation... they love current!

Screw the sump, put them in the tank!

Yes, there are lots of plants suited for sumps, but if you put them in your tank you get to enjoy them. Plants are a great natural filter, check out some of Hydrophyte's tanks for ideas... I personally like the more natural look tho.
