I am setting up a new tank for a carpinte. I have never owned one before and was wondering if live plants are an option with them or will they get excavated as quickly as I can plant them? If they are OK what works best with them?

Texas, escondito, carpintis love to dig..dig..dig ive had all of them and like fish is our hobby digging is theres.I would not use live plants without really anchoring them down .I would stick with plastic with them.

get lily pads from your local reservoir and clean them. Use plant disinfectants and all that stuff to make sure they won't harm your fish. Lily's have such long roots and thick stems a carpinte couldn't do anything to them.

2 more questions.

1) Will either of those ferns take root and grow in wood? There is lots of current in my tank so anything live in there should give lots of movement and look great. Also would I need any special lighting for these ferns?

2) The lilly pads we have here get 8-10" in diameter and 5' long. Do you have smaller ones that you use or do they just grow smaller in aquaria? And where do I get plant disinfectant?

I had thought of putting down good plant substrate then laying some plastic sheets with holes in them down (I think they are for needlepiont or something) then planting it and adding the gravel substrate over top of it all. Any thoughts on that?

OK maybe that was more than 2 questions.
