i was wondering if any 1 had success or is successful in keeping plants in a tank with pool filter sand as substrate. I am thinkin the plants would have a hard time staying in place and the roots wouldn't grow out properly..further more there would be rotting spots in the sand. If my theory is incorrect, PLEASE correct me and let me know. any feedback would be great, negative or positive. thanks in advanced..

if it is possible to keep plants in sand, ne suggestions in how to keep the plant down there for good? i dont want to wake up every morning to a floating plants

thanks

I have a planted tank with sand substrate. It's fabulous and my plants flourish. Only if you have big digging fish you will have to use means to secure your plants. Besides that, they will grow great and root effectively. Add some substrate fertilizer, though. And Malaysian trumpet snails keep 6'' of sand in my tank free of dead spots

What kind of root tabs? The seachem kind I tried stain any light sand really dark.

I have "high desert earth" sand from home depot in my 125...I'm not exactly happy with it...there are a lot of much bigger pebbles and different sized grains that after a while all come to the surface and look kind of ugly and uneven. Not a huge deal but i dont like it.

It's also had pretty bad brown algae problems. It may be just that my lighting is too much for the tank tho...one section of the tank isnt lit and the sand is still super bright white but under the lights its brown and ugly.
