How long will plants survive without lights? Im suposed to get my plants this weekend but my light fixture is not suposed to arrive until tuesday. Would they be ok if i got them on sunday and planted them with no light fixture or should i wait to get them??? Thanks for any help.

You'll be fine, unless it's super sensitive types like HC, but even then I wouldn't be worried

Nothing super sensative. Just a few low light plants that are fairly hardy. Im new to plants so im not going overboard tomstart. If they are going good i may add more later.

Well my light ended up coming in on Friday instead of Monday. Here is what it currently looks like. Its a little cloudy and the swords seem to be dieing on me.

Swords are heavy root feeders so they need root tabs... Here's what I recommend for people that want sand as their "noticeable" substrate... I tell them to first add a 2"-3" deep x 4"-8" wide of planted substrate like flourite where they intend to add plants, then cover the flourite with the sand so the tank looks like only sand was used, and to add some root tabs in the flourite for heavey root feeding plants like swords, crypts, vals...

Then to add new root tabs every 2-3 months to keep the heavy root feeders supplied with nutrients... The reason for the flourite is it has a high CEC (cation exchange capacity) which means it's able to soak up nutrients and release them back to the plants slowly instead of just adding root tabs under sand alone which in this case once the root tabs are gone there's no available nutrients until you add new root tabs.

Say you go on vacation or something... and it's around the time to replace the root tabs well by adding that layer of flourite means you don't have to worry about the plants starting to die off because the flourite will keep them "fed" by slowly releasing the nutrients it soaked up from the root tabs.

Thanks for the tip. I did add a root tab under each plant right after planting them. Im hoping the Swords come back but every day im getting less hope.

Your anubias and java fern will die the way you planted it!!! The rhizome is not allowed to be buried as it needs flow or it will rot and die! Tie it to the driftwood or make sure only the roots are buried!

The anubias rhizomes are visible. I the other is amazon swords which are not doing good. There is no java fern in the tank.

What's that on the right? They need flow. Not just visible. It will rot.
