U mean that white plastic piece? I run a few of those heaters, but never install it.you can use the heater vert. Or horizontal.

I thought it was to hold the heater in the gravel. The package thing makes sense.

I emailed to complain once because mine arrived broken. Customer service just emailed back and said the only thing that looks broken is the packaging support. Doh...

x2 can create a hot spot and lead the tanks temp to go well over 90 degrees
