On Saturday I bought a few plastic plants from "Michaels" (an arts and crafts store) with the mindset that they would make great aquarium plants. What I didn't consider is the metal rods inside the plants. They look great IMO, much better (and cheaper) then plants made specifically for the hobby. Does anyone use these? Does anyone know if the're safe? I'm under the impression that if the rods are stainless steel they should be alright but I don't know if they are. The brand is "Garden Collection Greenery".

you should be fine, their silk right?

no they just steel but the stalk on most fakes are plastic and sealed i've never had any problems had a couple that needed the ends melted to seal them a bit.

The rods are probably iron, or something like that. Shouldn't be a problem IMO.

Did the same thing with my plants. Got enough for a 120 for about $30. In the tank now for about six months and no problems yet.

I'll have to remember micheals next time I need plants. it's rediculous paying like $4 for a single plastic plant...

Put a magnet up to them, if they stick their steel wires, some I got with a used tank were severely rusted but I don't know how long they took to get that way (there were some silk plants in there too that were faded and washed out also).

Thanks guys, based on this and the advice I got in another forum I decided to put them in the tanks. They look great, better then any LFS plastic plant and the fish love em. :)
