Im setting up the filtration system for my 250 gallon in door pond. My plan is to take 2 5 gallon buckets, the first one will be full of plastic strapping the the second will have some form of mechanical filtration. Does this sould good.Ive got a 550 gph pump. The ponds in my garage so it does get down to the 20's in the winter, I was thinking NC natives, what would you stock it with.

I have 4 55 gallon barrels filled with poly strapping material for my 6000 gallon koi pond.

Your plan sounds pretty good to be.

I am using a bundle I got from work...it works well enough in an 8.5" x 48" tube sump I have running, I put blue mat over the top of the bundle for mech. filtration.

The one problem I see with your set up is the GPH, for that much water, I would use 2 of these pumps or a larger one. Shoot for x5 turnover at least-dependent on the fish your keeping. Also, be aware that even Koi need warmer than "the mid 20s" for water temp. As there immune system goes to sleep and they are prone to infections. (just what I have overheard in these and other forums.)

The koi can deal with water temps in the 20's- they will just go into hibernation, but you MUST not feed them. The tank should be cycled before adding koi because if it is not, then the germs/infections spread.

Koi should not be fed in waters under 54 degrees.

Have never used plastic straping for bio media. You need to put the mechanicall filtration before the bio filtration thow. And a bigger gph pump is deffinetly going to be a must.

Thanks, I know the threads old but ive read 2 times turnover is fine. Ill have 1 bullhead and three bluegill. I have a 20 gallon filter. So this should be fine while they are small and I can upgrade later when they grow.
