well after some more planning I think I have the dimensions of my tank build this summer set. I wanted to go with a 36 inch wide tank but there would be no way to get it out of the house once it was in so i changed the dimensions to 96"x30x48 (I love the look of tall tanks) which would put me around 611 gallons. Now the last snag is the plate glass. I looked at the pricing at glass cages, and I'm going to make a trip to lowes and home depot tomorow, but so far it looks like 1/2 starfire glass will be cheaper than 3/4 inch reg plate glass. My question is will 1/2 be strong enough?

For me, a tank that tall would be a massive waste of money. Its up to you though

Agreed, 1/2" is a no go.

Why do you say that? Just curious?...Neway thanks for the info. So even though I have heard starfire glass is much stronger than reg. tempered glass I should avoid the 1/2

I never seen anything that proves that starfire glass is any stonger than regular plate glass, it is pretty much just a higher quality of glass, not necessarily stronger though.

He is referring to the height of the tank. Depending on what you keep, the length and width of the tank is generally more important/useful in keeping cichlids. If the tank is populated properly, then you can work with about anything. Better footprints just allow for more flexibility in stocking.

I have 3/4 inch glass on mine and it's 42" tall. I wouldn't risk 1/2 inch..
