Hey all,

This is long overdue but I wanted to wait to share my platinum endlicheri Bichir growth and development. Since platinum endlicheri bichirs are notorious for slow growth, I hope this thread can provide some insights for any new or current platinum endlicheri Bichir keepers.

Shameless plug but I made a Instagram page for this Bichir and any other projects/fish I plan on keeping so please take a look and follow if you want more up to date footage and videos of my platinum endlicheri Bichir. You can find me @rayoddballfish

Before I get started I want to thank Hao Hao Burbotman Burbotman and giseok jung giseok jung for their wealth knowledge throughout the last few months. Their expertise and information were vital to my success.

Maintenance and Care:
- Daily 1-2 90 percent water changes
- Live feeding rosy red minnows and comet goldfish (treated with general cure and quarantined before use, gutloaded with massivores)
- Supplemental feeding of silversides, salmon, tilapia, shrimp

Okay let’s dive in (No pun intended) :IMG_6210.jpegOctober 17th 2023:
She came in from my buddy I Ihor Mashtalir . Started her out in my fluval flex 15 gallon aquarium. Fed her some quarantined serpae tetras as well as rosy red minnows. Daily water changes 90 percent.

November 9th 2023:
Upgraded her to a 30 gallon long aquarium. At this point she is roughly 5.5-6 inch. Starting to eat small size comet goldfish as well as her usual rosy red minnows. Started doing 2 90 percent water changes a day (cause I guess I had time) and to keep up with the goldfish bioload (I would release 100 at a time to make it easier for her to hunt and have a constant food source).

November 28th:
Added black diamond blasting sand week prior to this day to help bring out the whiteness of the fish as well as help it seem more at home. From my experience Bichir seem to eat better in a tank with substrate and decorations compared to bare bottom and I definitely saw an improvement in appetite (although she was still eating pretty well before). From the measuring tape she looks around 7inch at this point (fish is not flush against glass so it’s always a semi estimate for me).

December 7th 2023:
Platinum Endlicheri bichir is now approaching 9 inches. As you can see her external gills actually got even larger. My guess is this is due to clean and high oxygenation in the water. At this point most of her diet has been live fish that have of course been treated and quarantined.

December 12th:
Approaching the 9-10 inch mark and started to supplement the other frozen whole silversides in addition to the live comet goldfish feeding. This was also the day I went on vacation for 3 weeks so had to transport her back home (from college) and did not feed her or change any water for 3 weeks.

Jan 12th:
Came back from my vacation and fish lost a considerable amount of weight as well as her external gills started to absorb. This was a picture after a shrimp feeding so she was much skinnier when I got back.

I just wanted to say something for the people who read this thread. This statement still holds true. Most platinum endlicheri bichirs tend to have "poor" genetics. Ray here was fortunate to get a really nice specimen with good genetics. So don't expect the same growth out of your platinum endlicheri (unless yours has good genetics too).

January 25th 2024:
Came back to college and of course I had to bring her along. Had to resort to a temporary 30 gallon clear plastic tote since I couldn’t bring the tank back this time around. Don’t worry will be upgrading her to a real tank shortly. Definitely between 10-11 inch range at this point. Growth has started slowing down considerably.

February 15th 2024:
Platinum endlicheri is now officially in her 40 gallon growout tank. Guesstimate size around 11-12 inch at this point. Growing slow but steadily!

March 15th 2024:
Again growing steadily. Definitely hit 12 inch at this point.

April 13th 2024:
Growth is closer to 13 inch now.

May 12th:
Currently measuring at around 13.5-14 inch. Main diet is now silversides and have slowly decreased the live feeding. Also started incorporating earthworms into her diet. I also added more live plants into her scape and she seems to enjoy being within the foliage. She will be put into a 75 gallon planted Bichir tank in a couple weeks once I finish my final college semester and am looking for a 150 gallon to 210 gallon since she will need another upgrade sooner than

Hope this information is helpful. As Hao mentioned most platinum endlicheri Bichir will not achieve this kind of growth due to the captive breeding leading to genetic issues within platinum endlicheri Bichir, but maybe this can help you in selecting young platinum endlicheri bichir that do have potential as well as provide you with some of the maintenance necessary to grow these to a similar rate as normal cb endlicheri Bichir. Please ask any questions and would love to continue to update this thread periodically of the hopes of getting her to the 20-24 inch mark one day!

Feeder goldfish are a horrible feed for tropical fishes.
they are way too fatty and in general poor health
He states there quarantined, treated with meds and gut loaded with massivore. I think the documentation speaks for itself here. Fish is in prime condition and grew very quickly. If you take the time to actually hold back and care for reg comets/feeders they turn around health wise very quickly. I agree with u, dumping them in blind right from the lfs can be a poor choice.

You’re absolutely correct, but as a short term food source that is properly quarantined and gutloaded it helps fish growth tremendously. I’ve now incorporated mainly silversides and feeders as a treat

Yep couldn’t have said it better

Nice looking fish, Ive a few bichir myself.

Not sure why you'd ever feel the need to feed feeder fish as bichirs have got to be the easiest fish to feed anyway but each to their own
