Bought this 9" Xingu (sold as a Platinum) with a flat stomach. He's the most active Panaque I've ever owned, eats like a pig, sweet potato, zucchini, wood and algae wafers, his feces is solid with good color. Three weeks later there's no change, I though he'd plump out a bit by now.

My ammonia is a constant zero, nitrates 20ppm never reaching 40ppm. He's in a 175g running 2 Ehiem Pro cans with a 801 power head and Rena 400 for extra air. The only drama in the tank was last week when I took a gamble on a Goldline that didn't make it.

I'm wondering if I may have a problem ?

Put a huge driftwood in there. My royals like zucchini and green pepper. Keep feeding unless there is parasite

How long have you had it? I have a similar sized Xingu that sounds similar, an ok eater, he's always been 'skinny' with a flat stomach and eyes slightly more sunk than I'd like. But he's been this way for the 3 years I've had him. I've treated for worms/parasites a few times since I've had him. I'm inclined to think this is just how he is, a slim fish.

Btw I think your guy in the picture is from the Tocantins, not a Xingu.

Jer, thanks for the link, I've been following that one, your thoughts lead me to wonder if there aren't any beneficial bacterial enzymes that could be added to our tanks to help the digestive tracks of our plecos ?

Matubula, thank you for the Tocantins ID, I was hoping I may just have a skinny specimen too, but this morning the L190 who was very plump is exhibiting a flat stomach too. They where both purchased around three weeks ago from two separate LFS.

lmt, I think I have the drift wood covered for the time being, but will try adding green peppers to the diet and will not medicate.

Given that another Panaque is getting slim, and the earlier loss, I think you have something going on in the tank. Did you quarantine and treat them before you added them to main tank?

I can only physically handle one tank these days due to ongoing back issues. Of course quarantine is the proper way to go, but have to do without and take my chances.
Did scout out these two Royals, they where in their prospective LFS for weeks and eating well before I brought them home (no substitute for a quarantine tank, I know).
For now no more new Royals till things stabilize, hopefully with good water perimeters and good food, good health will prevail.
