I know these aren't monster fish but this is my desktop tank and i thought the behavior was really interesting. For some reason I have one cherry barb that took a downhill turn throughout the day. Now he is laying on the bottom with his fins spread out taking large breaths but he can still swim. When he swims though he seems to twitch a lot and gulp his mouth open and closed rapidly. Since he has been doing this the platy I have has been hanging around him a lot. She will lay down next to him and rub her fins and body against his. She will also just go and hang around him a lot. Anyone else see something like this? I am not sure what is wrong with him he seemed healthy not long ago so if anyone has ideas I would like to save him. He is the lone survivor of a crap batch from a chain store since that is all I have near me. All the other fish are fine.

That’s a sweet story. Gotta love such bonds in the animal kingdom. I once trapped a woodchuck (live trap) and its buddy sat next to the trap when I got there. I got soft when I saw that and released the trapped woodchuck again right there...no broccoli in our garden that year.
You hear such stories as yours about tench (Tinca tinca), but I’ve never seen it in person.
Thanks for sharing!

One time my Polleni got sick, I cleaned out my canister filter after it had only been running for a month and my cycle must have crashed. He was on his side, breathing heavily so I dumped an old filter in the tank, tried to get some water flowing through his gills and started to do a water change.

He started to get better but he still couldn't stay upright, my Polypterus Endlicheri of all fish, swam up to my Polleni and curled around him so he would stay upright. I couldn't believe my eyes. My female Polleni was also close by watching the whole thing and stayed by the males side during his whole recovery process.

In my grandmas tank there was a during angelfish ,every time he would end up upside down the discus would nudge him till he was upright again.
