mmhmm.. ok so my gf has a platy that has been pregnant, i believe, for like 3+ months, the thing is huge and the male still follows it around all over......anyone know what is goin on??? or what i might be able to do to help???/ thanks
I heard that livebearer's can retain sperm for later use. So that means that a female can make herself pregnant without a male (just in case he dies). Y'know...continue the species theory. So for her to be pregnant for 3 months is possible. Has she given birth yet to anything?
mmmkkk ill look for it - what about other fish in the tank eating them....they are just some tetras and plecos .. so u think they she just keeps giving birth , like slowly over and over..???
She may have absorbed the fry due to the stress of the male still trying to "get some". if you want fry you should try adding another female or two so that the male will be too busy bothering everyone to stress just one out. the other fish will eat most of them quickly, but from what I've seen with a pond full of Platies the fry are fairly big (for fry) and quicker than say molly fry. Good luck, they're kinda fun for little guys.
Quite often, a water change with a bit of salt added and a small temperature rise can help induce platys to give birth. If you've got plenty of hiding places in the tank and some fine leave plants or java moss, the little dudes should avoid predation. Tetras do like platy fry for dinner though.....
