Looking to change my malawi tank over to substrate from gravel. Any tips? Do i need something particular or is play sand ok? Have gotten conflicting opinions. Also, do I need to rinse it well and should I take the fish out while adding and for how long till it settles.

NO PLAY SAND! i use 20 grade silica sand. cheeper than play sand and comes in bags of 100lbs instead of 50lbs for the same price. i love it! it's clean and my cichlids LOVE it!

play sand is okay...i used it for my pbass... no problems... doesnt raise ph or nothin....
it takes a couple of rinses though, to get all the junk out of it.... but it works and looks nice.... as far as silica sand never heard of it.... play sand out here in cali @ lowes... has different pounds of bags even 100lbs... and prices range from 10$ - 25$...

do you have fish in the tank already?

silica sand you can get at lowes for $7. fill a 5gal bucket half full with sand, swish around a few times, and dump the water. really easy. only needs to be washed once a few times.
