So after some long and careful thinking I have decided to turn my tiny 29g into a Rio Negro Biotope. Upon doing research, and watching 4 documentaries on the amazon river I have narrowed the most accurate substrate between these two. I would just like to know which one of these two in your opinion would look more accurate in terms of replicating the amazon river. Oh, and also are both safe for aquariums? I don't want to put anything in the tank that could potentially alter the water chemistry.

The match, to the look you want, is up to you.
Both are safe to use, but be aware the play sand will need a great deal of cleaning before you can use it.
Pool filter sand is a more even grain. Not as dirty out of the bag. Color can vary by region.
People who have fish that sift or dig favor the PFS. It has the weight needed to not get up into the water column when disturbed, either by the fish or during cleaning.

I was considering the pool filter sand, I just thought it might contain some sort of chemical, but since it doesn't I think that it might be what I'm going to use. Thanks for the response :)

Pool filter sand all the way! just make sure you rinse, rinse, rinse and rinse again!

Howdy,

Planted tank: Play sand. Contains clay etc that serves as ferts.
No plants: PFS. Cleaner.

your hardware store should also have what is called paving sand, it looks very similar to play sand but the grains are bigger and heavier so that they don't get up into the water.

Thanks for all the responses guys! :) I think I am definetly
Going with PFS, the setup is going to be all hardscape so I dont think I'll be worrying too much about plants. The paving sand isn't a bad suggestion either, but I like the look of the PFS.

PFS all the way! Good luck finding it now in the winter though...check specific pool supply stores.

never thought being a pool plasterer wood be beneficial in any other way then giving my buddies good deals on refinishing their pools but alas...i have bags and bags of this stuff! hooray for me..lol
