i went to the local homedepot and found white play sand that ive been looking for ,for about 1year now. i was so happy :headbang2 that i bought 4bags of it. but now as i was just about ready to use them i just noticed on the bag in big bold letters its says not for aquriams (NOOOOOOO!!!!! :nilly:  ) but its playsand. dose anyone think i could chance it if i wash the sand very good i could get a away with it. i read the bag up and down it dosent say anything about any toxins or chemicals after all its play sand for kids right??? please help thanx

Rinse it out good and you should have no problems. I'm using a bag of it mixed in with some of the other sand-Sakrete that is brown and have no problems. I've had it in my mini wall tank for over 6 months and the convicts I have are all doing fine and breeding.

Good luck.:D

I have been using playsand in my 75 gallon heavily planted for about 2 months now. I have 6 Puffers, an oscar, a Tire Track Eel, and a goby in the tank. The only problem I have had, is the tank is hard to get completely cleared up. It seems to always have this slight cloudiness. I used mostly cycled water out of my 125 to start it and used a cycled magnumn 350 as filtration. I don't know for sure if its the sand, but I think it may be. None of my other three tanks are having this problem and it's the only one with play sand.

When i went to Home Depot to buy my sand they had all-purpose sand and play sand. Once I saw not for aquariums on the play sand I bought the all purpose just to be safe

Pool filter sand works much better. It is a silica sand and a little heavier so it doesn't stay suspended. You still need to wash it thoroughly before adding it to your aquarium. Play sand can be very dirty. You can buy pool filter sand at your local pool supply store for very little.

i think i might setup a smaller tank and use some of it and add a few feeders in it first to c what happens, but i think i could get a away with it. BTW. do u guys know of any other type of sand thats white that is deffinetly safe for a tank, is poolfilter sand white??? thanx allot for all the help guys

I have it in my 55 brackish tank. its always clear. I had a brown algea bloom for a while. as much as i want to blame the sand Im pretty sure its because I was lazy about my tank maintaining for a month or so... thats all ive really got on the stuff
