So Ive heard of people using play sand as their substrate, which is apparently really cheap and works well.

What the hell is it??

Is it that stuff you can buy at home depot or lowes that comes in all kinds of different colors??

Thanks

how much that run? and come in black and not white?

Play sand usally is like 3 bucks for a 50lb bag it comes in only white that I know of. Just make sure to rinse it out before adding it to the tank. I got it from Home Depot

Howdy,

If you have a planted tank - great substrate! It still contains clay etc that serves as natural root fertilizer. If you don't have/want plants, then get pool filter sand. Just as cheap, but less of a mess!

play sand freaking sucks

its too light... it floats in the water, gets in your filters and they start making noise

pain in the ass to clean bc it is sucked up too easily. And you can see waste with ease, so you will want to clean it often.

Save yourself the hassell of changing out later... get a heavier sand

I do have a somewhat planted tank. Kind of new to the planted thing, have plants in my 125 with very big natural gravel.

Was wanting to switch the media over to sand for aesthetic and plant substrate reasons.

Can anyone suggest any other sand thats cheap and works well and comes in black?

Also when doing water changes how do you go about cleaning the substrate? I feel the gravel vac would suck up/stir up the sand too much.

black sand is expensive. I got some on ebay, $60 for 100 lbs. If you can find 3M colorquartz, I think it is a bit cheaper.

To clean the sand, hold the end of the hose just above the sand and it shouldn't suck much sand up, but it will get everything else.
