I just got a new 55 gallon today and I want to put sand in the bottom of this one... The guy at the LFS told me that I could go to home depot and buy some sand box type play sand and it would be fine... Is this true?

yep play sand has to be washed a dozen times, pool filter sand I washed once and it was good to go.

Pool filter sand huh? Would I be able to find this at home depot? Or would I have to go to a pool and spa place? And exactly how would I wash the sand? Just put it in a bucket and run water over it?

Got mine at a pool place. Anyone who does pool maintnance/installs should have it. And yeah to rinse it I just filled a bucket and ran water into it. Its priced about the same as home depot sand about 2.50 a 50lb bag. For a 150g I only used two bags.

Yes WASH IT FIRST. I was in a hurry and did not wash it before I put in in my 150 gl. It has been 3 months and every time I do my weekly water change it looks like skim milk when I'm done.:screwy:

I'll vote for pool filter sand as well. I dont even wash it when I use it lol.

Howdy,

If you want a planted tank: Get play sand. I didn't even wash mine. The remaining clay serves as a great fertilizer depot.

so long as you don't have rays or many burrowing type creatures.. play sand is alot rougher and sharper than other types of sand...
but otherwise, sounds like a good idea...
