So I had a big fire eel years ago. It took forever for me to break him to frozen. I grew him from 8" to 24"+ and he had an awesome personality. He hand fed and would beg for food. Then my tank exploded. I got a friend to keep him temporarily. And as these stories typically end he climbed out and died. His tank wasn't eel proof like mine. This was the only fish my wife ever liked. I've tried a few baby eels since and had no success.
I found a listing for "show" size fire eel on a fish list. I inquired about actual size and was told "at least 12 inches." Then the guy went out on a limb and ballparked these unseen eels at "probably more like 18" based off of a whim. Well it was a great price and my wife still owed my a father's day gift....sooooo I rolled the dice. My brother picked up the package today. He texted me while I was still at work and said, " I think he is about 18 inches or so." When I finally got home and looked in the bag he seemed a little bigger. I guessed 20" or so. Then once we transfered him from the bag to a 5 gallon I saw how thick he was and was blown away. Once he was in the tank we realized how big he actually is. My tank is 27.5" front to back. Stretched out he is about 2 inches shy of touching front to back. At least 2.5" around. He is huuuuuuge. My wife was blown away when she got home. I'm gonna try feeding tomorrow. I got a few pics with my phone. I will get dslr tomorrow. Everyone meet Ted!!!
