These are stupid noob questions! : O.k., are the striped Kenyi-hybrids the same as 'zebra'/convict fish? At what age can you tell the sex of a JD? (Mine is about 2 1/3", dark brown w/blue and aqua dots.) Is it only by the amount/pattern of dots on an older fish? TIA:)

What do you mean by kenyi-hybrids? Kenyi are Kenyi, not the same as anything else. Young Kenyi are all blue with darker stripes, as they mature the males turn yellow with darker stripes. I don't know anything about JD's, maybe someone else can help with that.

I would post the JD question in the Central/south American section. You will get a lot more answers to that part. I am confused by the kenyi hybrid part as well. Kenyi are Metriaclima lombardoi they are a real species.

Originally I thought my cichlids were hybrids, because that's what the petsmart person said they were. Then after I posted pix, one person answered and told me they were pix of Kenyi. Most stuff on internet and in books is at least a year old. Couldn't make heads or tails of it. But now I know they are probably Kenyi. I'm posting some pix of my JD, but never know what cichlid Forum to put them on?

Oh, and are convicts and kenyi same? Have heard convicts called zebra fish, they both look similar to me. All except for the one stripe by the forehead? unless I am needing glasses, which I probably do.

They are not the same but are very different

Thanks so much for clearing that up for me!:D Now I need to know = Is it 'safe' to have a few Kenyi and a one JD in tank together, at least for a month, while I'm setting up another tank? Are either of them in danger? I watch them a lot, they don't fight. Only the Kenyi chase each other once in a while, they don't actually touch or nip one another. They are in 29 gl.

Technically Kenyi's are African while your JD/convicts are SA/CA, so they should have different water parameters to fully thrive in the long run, but I have seen many tanks where JD's and/or cons are happily living with African Mbuna species.

Thanks to everybody again for answering my questions! You have all been very very helpful. I really appreciate all of you sharing your knowledge and opinions!:D
