They only get 6-7 foot long lol... Pond or return time I think:-)

Sorry!-)

I'm sure Viktor will chime in soon.

Agree with the guys above.

It's as monster as they get, both in size and in attitude - territorially aggressive to other bottom-dwelling catfish. It's either Sperata acicularis or Sperata aor. It appears we get the acicularis 100x more often than aor. Sperata seenghala is said to not enter the trade.

The three are virtually indistinguishable when small to the best of my knowledge.

Thanks very much thebiggerthebetter thebiggerthebetter ....

I was really hoping it wouldn't get bigger than about 1m max...
Its not easy to come across nice catfish in SA..
We either see some of the little guys that I cant keep in my tank or the monsters like Red tail catfish and Shovelnoses... (which makes no sense)
About a year ago we managed to get the LFS to bring in a Tigrinus for us but since then we haven't been able to get another one..

Anyway... thanks again for the help.. much appreciated

For all we presently know, there is not one MFKer that showed a large Sperata raised in captivity. By large I mean at least 3' or 1 meter as you mentioned.

So 5'-7' might not happen for you anyway, if you decided to keep it. It's more slender than RTC, more like TSN, which is helpful too.

In short, if you say you can keep a fish at no more than 1 meter long, I think you should try with this guy.

My trio of alleged "aor" is about 2 years old and still around 1.5' = 50 cm. They live in 4500 gal.
