Well, unfortunately my 500g aquarium project has come to a virtual halt. But looking at my other options, I was planning on making an outdoor elevated pond. I would make a wooden box frame approximately 10x5x3 ft, then line it with pond lining. The catch is, if possible, I would like to make viewing windows. I have never undertaken an outdoor project like this, and am asking for some help. What filtration should a pond have? It will be a RTC, TSN, Arowana, south american tank (this is still up in the air). Pretty much filtration is my biggest concern, cause i have never made a sump for a tank like this. I would like something simple. It doesn't have to be pretty, just functional. Keep in mind that I am an experienced carpenter, and can work with tools. Just help on filtration and how to make the viewing windows.

Thats going to be awesome..best of luck doing it..i love the idea of windows!

Awsome idea. You could try pond canister filters.

viewing windows? that sounds awesome. i have kind of wanted to do the same thing for a long time, but don't want to until I am in the house I know I am going to own for a long time. I would probably get some thick acrillic and make some recessed spots for it. put the pond liner in before you install the acrylic, and seal the acrylic over the recessed spots and then cut away the pond liner thats blocking the viewing window. probably would require quite a bit of silicon, and dealing with the wrinkles in the pond liner wouldn't be easer when trying to make it water tight. maybe cut the hole ever the recessed spot and silicon around that....definitely a difficult problem to get around, but I would go about it that way (the second way)when using a pond liner and wood construction. with the one I want to build I will make it out of cement and rock work, and epoxy the inside to seal it. its less difficult to put viewing windows in when you don't have to deal with a pond liner.

what is capacity for pond canister filters, and price?

Can some kind of padding be used between the liner and the wood? If so coffin style with fused edges around the viewing windows would be nice.

What do you use to fuse the edges bigspizz?

Fiber glass, carbon fiber, heat,.....Something will work I would think. Sounds like it could anyhow:)
