Well, I haven't been home in a little over a week so I have had family taking care of my fish. When I got back home tonight I realized that my male convict's stomach was pretty swollen up. So, of course, I jumped on here right away to figure out what my options were. Now, I have read about several different cures for bloat but, where as I have never dealt with it before I don't know what works the best or the proper ways to administer some of the cures. I was hoping someone on here who has experience dealing with bloat could give me some insight on what has worked best for them. Please help me.

I think Epsom Salt is the best way to go. One tablespoon per ten gallons -- administer enough to "treat" half of the volume the first day, and half the next. Many of the folks I've shared this information with have reported success, so I feel comfortable saying that there's a good chance it will work for your fish.

You can melt the Epsom Salt in warm water and then allow it to cool to room temp and add dechlorinator before adding the solution to the tank. Epsom Salt offers many benefits, two of which are the reduction of swelling and help with constipation. Don't use Aquarium Salt, as it is not the same thing!

I'd also test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, just to make sure you're okay there. Obviously, it's only affecting one fish, but it doesn't hurt to be sure!

This treatment should eliminate symptoms within three days if it's going to work. If it doesn't then you know you'll need to try something else. It's something else I like about this -- you're not sitting around waiting for results forever. It works fast, and if doesn't work for your particular case, then you can move on to something else!

I wouldn't discount the possibility that they may have just been overfeeding, since you had other people taking care of your fish for a while. Before you start any treatment, I would just fast him for a few days and keep a close eye on him.

depending on whether there is improvement, you might have to use some meds, perhaps metronidazole

I think this would be the next thing to try if there's no improvement with the Epsom Salt.
