Ok heres the deal, i just added some algae remover into my tank....... its called alagefix ..... anyways my flowerhorn is now sitting in the corner of the tank not moving not doing anything... i did this during a water change, well if freaked out and did another water change and he is still sitting in the corner??? does anyone know if the alagefix is having a bad reaction on the fish??? should i do a complete water change??? PLEASE HELP ME, i dont want him to die, hes about 5 inches and i had him since he was about 1

algae remover can kill off your beneficial bacteria, which is why you should never use it. check your parameters

OK GUYS FIXED THE PROBLEM AND DID A COMPLETE WATER CHANGE!!! THX! I dont know if u guys ever used this stuff but thats def what the problem was, i didnt have a bad alage problem but wanted to make sure the stuff never grew again, a bad mistake that i learned from, ill just instead keep on cleaning it when it appears ...........

Algae killer is only ever a temporary fix. Once it's gone from the tank the algae will just grow back unless you change something about the tank.

Less nutrients in the water, more plants, change the light levels, get some algae eating fish or a glass scraper. Some combination of those options will be better than filling the tank with toxic chemicals.

Be prepare to go thru a possible complete re-cycling of the filter. Keep a close eye on the chemistry (atleast every other day, preferably daily) and have some aged water on hand for W/C's.

Some fish are very sensitive to algae killers and it can kill fish and inverts. and like Onion01 said, wipe out your filter. :nilly:

Glad to hear you got a handle on it quickly, good thing you hadn't retired for the night. :clap

Lesson learned for everyone...never change anything in the tank and go away without checking it for several hours first.

Good save. IMHO never add chemicals to your tank unless you are absolutely sure of any potential problems it could cause. Most conditions in your tank can be addressed by changing something you do, ie. less light, less food, better filtration, more water changes, a lil elbow grease etc. The best thing to do i find a natural remedy for your tank.

did you guys know that its not even legal to sell algaecide in ontario anymore (according to the dude at one of my lfs)? apparently its poisonous to people
