I just got this cat with a tank I purchased, the seller did not know the species. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Johnny,
the fish is a Colombian shark cat (Hexanematichthys seemanni) formerly Arius. These fish generally need brackish water as they grow, many people keep them in freshwater and although they survive they usually end up stunted due to the lack of mineral content in the water, beware, they can grow in excess of 35cm and devour any fish that will fit into their rather large mouths, this genus are mouthbrooders i believe.
Hope this is of some help to you.

they are ok with smaller fish generaly i have one that is about 11" and he is fine with mollys over 1/2" the smaller ones go missing tho but his mouth is too small for a 1/2 molly

I love these cats. They are correct on everything they have said. If you only have one, Id suggest to go get two more. They like to be in groups. I made the mistake with mine to try to keep it fresh, and at the 6-7" mark he ended up dieing. I only had one but he loved to school with my IDs. That's the main reason I wanted to try to keep him fresh. I'm going to try them out again and get them to full marine.

Theres always exceptions to the rule, generally predatory cats of 11inches will eat mollies, however if they have grown up with small tank mates their entire lives then they often dont look at them as a potential meal, its the new additions you have to watch.
