Fishing in Wisconsin
Since my fish atlas is late in the mail, I'll leave it to the experts here.
Please give me whatever you can on this cichlid. That's all the guy at the LFS knew is that it is a cichlid.

All input is very much appreciated.

I've had it for a few weeks, he's about 1.5" long.

looks like a demon fish to me (geophagus jurupari)

I could be wrong, but thats my best guess

def a Geo not sure on exact spec. though

Looks like a Geophagus Steindachneri IMO.... That's from the blurred pics, I'd need a proper picture for a proper ID.

Thank you. I googled Geophagus Steindachneri and the pictures seem to agree. Anyone else have an opinion? Any advice on keeping this fish?

Its hard to see except a little bit in the third picture, but there's a dark broken up stripe down the sides of this fish. The female Geophagus Steindachneri in the google picture, which it closely resembles, does not have this, does that help sex the fish, or is it too young?

I have a lone male in my 90gal. He has courted one of my G. dicrozoster's, he is quite the character.
The males are A LOT more colourful than the females. Light blue down the sides, and of course the red hump on the head. Females are very drably coloured. I have seen red humps when quite small (~1.5") and the sex was quite apparant. The males were already starting to colour up.

Here is a pic of mine at about 5.5":

Burt :)

That is a Geophagus dicrozoster....

If you want more you should look to get another female or two, and a male. The males like a harem, as they are active breeders and will bother a single female to death (thats what mine did). Having a few females helps spread his hormones out lol...
