Hi. It is a true gar species, most likely a Florida gar. They will get 18-24" in captivity, so you will need a large (100+ gallon) tank in the future. How long is it now? You should expect it to hit 12" in about 6 months time.

Was it feeding at the store? If so, keep feeding it whatever the store had it on. Otherwise, start it on live feeders (rosy red minnows make great feeders). Keep it well fed, every day. Once it gets larger you can try getting it to take shrimp, fish fillet, krill and pellets.

Welcome to the addiction!

Conner >> Thank you very much. Its around 6-7" now, yes i am planning on a larger tank soon. Store owner said blood worms.
I paid 15 bucks for it. Is that too much?
Thanks again for the ID!

Thanks guys. I tried looking at the Keys, but i still couldn't tell it was a Florida Gar. I thought it was a Shortnose Gar.

Not real likely to be shortnose gar. If it was going to be anything other than a Florida gar, it might be a longnose, but that looks 100% Florida to me. They're cool gars, and stay small enough to be manageable.

Frozen bloodworms will work ok for the gar, but you really need to get some meatier foods for it. Either cut up market shrimp or tilapia fillet, or if it won't take those, maybe go with the rosy red minnows.

And $15 is a good price around here too.

florida!

Yeah a few of the pictures look to be a marble gar (Not a true gar) but im convinced after viewing them closer that its a florida. you will absolutely enjoy it! Congrats
