I got this a few weeks ago and I believe it is a Nicaraguan or a NicxCon Hybrid. The store took it in from a customer along with 4 of the largest Cons I have ever seen. Customer said they were HRP, I know they are definitely not. store had them labled as convicts. But the cons had huge heads so I am wondering if they were all Nic x con hybrids and this one took more after the Nic side and the others took after the con side.

The reason I think it is not full nic if the head is more navy blue not the metalic blue you see in pics but then again I have never seen a sub adult nic so maybe they start this way. I know juvies have no blue. Sorry for the long winded post.

What do you think?

@Duanes yours are different form any of the ones I see on google image is it a different collection point or something? They are very nice looking.

@FWPrawn Thanks hybrid or not I like.

It looks like a pure nic to me. It maybe inbred or deformed. I had a HRP that was several generations of inbreeding and her head was tiny compared to the body. She was different then the rest. Some people usually cull these deformed fish.
I don't think its possible to cross a nic with other sp. The reason is the way they breed. Most CA cichlids are substrate or cave spawners like convicts. Their eggs are attached to a surface where a nic's eggs are lose. The breeding is very different and the chances of that happening are very low. She has nice colors though.

Mine are still very young, and haven't really colored up yet, they are only 2" to 4" so far. The largest is the one with the most color, probably a male.

I have seen nic x firemouth hybrids absolutely beautiful fish. When I was researching mine came across a youtube video of nic x con and nic x salvini hybrid fry. Unfortunatly to small to compare to mine. So they can breed with other fish. But thank you for your input.

so we have 2 votes hybrid and 1 vote pure. Sounds like the argument in my head :)

I'm not saying its impossible, but unlikely successfully producing viable fry. My nic female has been trying to breed with my male syn, but he has no interest what so ever. This fish really doesn't look much different then any other female nic IMO. The head is a little smaller (which could be a young fish) and it is dark. That to me is not enough to call a fish a hybrid. Duane's nics look unique to me. I have never seen nics with any pink on them like that. It doesn't mean they are hybrids though.
