The females usually sport a black blotch in the dorsal.
Below a couple videos of uropthalmus in their natal habitat un the Yucatan, Mexico.
Colors can vary widely according to substate You can see the females, with black blotches.

great videos Duane. They also give a real world look at what the real condition of wild cichlids typically are that most do not realize. No full grown, show perfect specimens. usually a little rough and .. well.. wild looking..

First time I'd seen one in the flesh.
Getting some live ones has been my goal.
That was the first one I'd seen in 5 months of on/off collecting.
In fact, it was the only other cichlid species I've seen, other than Andinoacara, and feral Tilapines that are everywhere.
