This is a friend's fish. He is from malaysia. He says it is dark green. I'm thinking it is a species of tilapia but I'm not sure.

Sorry the photos aren't very good but hopefully someone knows what it is. I also hope I posted this under the right section of the forums

I think it might be a Etroplus suratensis, aka green chromide.
 
Agree with darth pike. E suratensus, they like brackish, warm water (80sF), and get fairly large (over 12").
They are from Sri Lanka, and are primarily vegetarian.
In the pic below, mine was just under a ft.
