Hello,
I am a new member here. I acquired this fish 7 years ago. At the time, he was around 4" long. He is a now a full 13" in length and quite "thick." He was sold to me as a "Blue Devil" cichlid which I dont think exists. The other day my LFS had a fish in a breeder tank labeled a Flowerhorn that looked almost exactly like my fish. (No KOK?) Mine has been extremely stressed this week as my previous tank sprung a leak, forcing an emergency new tank purchase. He is now in a new 75 gallon. (I know this may be still too small for him but its all I can fit.) He also had a slight injury on his head in the process of this event but he has recovered well.

This is an ANGRY fish. He follows people around his tank, bangs the glass trying to bite fingers and I'm quite sure he would bite me if I let him. Super entertaining fish!

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? someone once suggested he could be an Umbee but I dont think he looks quite right.

Is this guy maxed out on size?

His coloring is blue-ish in these pictures but in person many of his scales on his are very pearly in color.

Here is a video of him:

Below are some pictures. Thanks ahead of time for any help on what he might be!

I don't know if I would classify this guy as a flowerhorn. It could be a flowerhorn cross of some sort. As for kok, KOK is all in the genes.

the eye colour certainly shows that it is a kamfa. with no kok it might be a female or it might have been mixed with a kokless male. im not sure the cause of its black coloration. might be fading but not sure.

Thanks for all the replies. How long do fish of this type live? Do they continue to grow until death or max out at some point?

I'm currently trying to convert him to floating pellets to make the tank a bit cleaner but its a mixed bag right now.

My biggest problem with him is he attacks the heater, filter intake and outtake, the powerhead, air lines.....I'm trying to shield them with some plants to see if he will get used to them but i'm going to need a more secure way to hold them to the glass because this guy is strong.

Also, how do people re-arrange their tanks or do maintenance with fish like this? My wife has to distract him at the other end of the tank but he charges down to attack all the time and he is insanely aggressive. He will try to bite my hand above the water and guards the tank openings...

His name is "The Punisher"

I have a couple questions. Where did you purchase this fish and was there more than just one to choose from, if so did they mostly look identical?

Looking at your last pic I'm thinking he is a he. He will not grow much larger in length but could grow a little wider. I'm not an expert I'm just going by what I have read in the past. I'm very sure he won't be growing a hump this late in his life. Most quality flowerhorns will show hump or kok growth under 4 inches, some a bit later.

For cleaning tanks around aggressive cichlids I have used floresecent diffuser grids as dividers, trapping the said fish to one side at a time.
