(I will ask that this thread stay here as there is much more traffic here)
a couple of weeks ago my heros (first pic) came down with some disease or whatever that litteraly seemed to melt its fins away and practicaly changed the entire feel of the fins.
i put it in my pond hoping it was not contagious (:wall::wall:) yesterday on my beautiful oscar i noticed a pale edging on his fin, he has got it.
do you know what this is??? is it lethal? is it curable? is this a newly discovered diseas that will practically mutate and eventually kill my fish. i wont move a fish from the pond untill it is cured. pleeeaaaasssseee help!

I will leave this here for a few days but you would get better answers in the disease/health section (but your choice).

Looks like a bacterial infection (if so treat with Tetracycline or similar).

Could be from stress, vitamin deficiency, pH problems etc.

Need to know all water parameters.

What other fish are in the pond / tank with it?

The more info we have in the beginning the faster we can help.

Most likely fin rot.... You should be able to find meds for it at your lfs.

I'll second that...looks like fin rot.

And what is "fin rot" caused by?...

You have to cure the cause too, not just the symptom.

I assumed that once he got a diagnosis, the OP would then go do some searching.

Fin rot is notoriously difficult to cure, because it's pretty impossible for the average aquarist to figure out what sort of bacteria (gram + or -) is causing the problem.

Personally, I don't believe in treating fish with antibiotics without knowing exactly what organism is being faced. I've cured fin rot in the past with very frequent water changes.

A lot of people seemingly prefer meds but IMO I'd keep the water perfect (Ammon/Nitrites at '0' and Nitrates below 5). Prevention is the cure.

Thanks a lot!!! i thought fin rot had red streaks through the fin? anyway thanks a lot is there any hope for the heros?
dr joe do what ever you want could you leave it here for one more day though?

Sometimes you do see the red streaks, but often it's just an erosion. It can move pretty quickly, too.
