Please Help Me

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well. I do have a 10 gallon thats fully cycled...but 2 problems, it belongs to my mother, and its stocked FULL of guppies and baby guppies. I'll be getting another filter for it soon, so it'll be able to do what it needs to.

I'll have to do more water changes too.

Thanks,
Shane

maybe you should put the albino in there anyway. at least it might be tempted to eat something :naughty: .

Hah,
Evil. Mom already offered for me to put him in there. I think I'll be doing that tomorrow. I can't right now, cause her tanks in her room. She works early mornings, so yeah...not a good time.

Hi
You need that filter off your mothers tank it has all the good bacteria in it which will start your filters off.
I have just been in the same spot of trouble as you are now. Water changing did nothing just stressed the fish out nitrite stayed off the scale.
I got a mates filter off his tank strait on to my tank and added Sera Nitrivec at the intoxication dose the Nitrite started to come down in two days totally gone in four days.:headbang2

good luck
ps make sure your tank is getting oxygen :thumbsup:

Hi Shane,
Seems you have gotten a lot of good advice so far!
Im new here but have experienced a bit on this.
First, it's best to get your albino into a more controllable environment (the 10 gal tank) ASAP!
If there is a way you can kep the water moving (I directed the filter output) to get the food "drifting" about (I used frozen brine shrimp and bloodworms) it will help as well (my bicher took in food by default as he lay there "gulping") ... more on ths another time.
Regarding filtration/aeration, not knowing what you have as a primary filter in the 75, might I recommend that you look into a "bio-wheel" type filter as your next purchase (marineland.com available locally, I am sure) which supposedly not only increases the effective area for bacteria growth, but increases oxygination as well.
Money saving tip: My local PetSmart honors online prices (be sure to print out the pages) which has saved me an average of 40% over in-store pricing!
In addition to adding some "cycled" water from the 10 gal tank (good suggestion, helped me a lot of cycling my new tank!) You could add bacteria by using "Stability" (what I use) or "Cycle" to help get things going. I tried "Bio Spira" (expensive) but was disappointed when the bacteria bloomed and died in 3 days! Any way you look at it, cycling takes time (took me 6 weeks and it's been 2 weeks since I introduced fish and I am *still* dealing with nitrIte spikes!) If anyone knows of, or invents a nitrite neutralizer, I'll be first in line to get some! 8~}
Also note that some medications can kill off beneficial bacteria and put you back to "square one" for cycling, so be careful!
Hope you find some of this helpful!
Best of luck,
Dave

PS being new, I don't want to overstep my bounds so please let me know if I have. 8~}

Bounds,we got bounds? lol Welcome to the forum-Anne

Thanks for the welcome, Anne, I'm sure I am in good company!

BTW, just read your species list on Knives ... will be invaluable in finding my next one (thought I'd start with an African and move up to a BGK) Knowing how HUGE they get, I have thus far resisted the temptation to go with a clown ... I learned my lesson with the electric eel ... ended up donating him to a zoo after he got 3.5 feet long!

Back to birchers ... I have some video to post as soon as I can edit it to a reasonable size!
Best,
Dave

I wouldn't feed at all if the nitrite is off the scale. Don't feed for a few days and after then once every other day. IMO this coupled with water changes is the way forward.
