My 5 inch male Carpintis has something popping through his scales. He lives in my 180 Gallon tank where he used to live with two other large cichlids. He is currently the only fish in the tank. My water parameters are ideal, I test weekly: PH 7.2, Nitrates 0, Nitrites 0, Water Temp 79.8. I have attached some pictures that are the best I can get for now. It looks like a white colored tumor that is lifting and pushing out his scales. This first appeared about two weeks ago and the only thing I have treated with so far is Aquarium Salt. It has only gotten worse. PLEASE HELP ME HELP MY CARPINTIS.

That is a beautiful carpintis. Possibly hexamita infection. What do you feed it? Start treating with a 50 percent water change aquarium salt 1 table spoon per 5 gallons. Bump temp up. I have had fish with what looks like your fish has. This is how I treated it successfully. I'm sure someone else has a better treatment though. The diet you feed your fish is also very important. Stick with a well balanced diet.

If it pops up in more places, and goes away on its ownn in a few weeks, it's probably lymph. Did you add any new cichlids recently?

Hexamita? Just with that one spot on the side? I don't think so

I said possibly hexamita. Why do think its not?

I would expect to see it on/around the head more or right on the lateral line and they usually burst after a couple weeks--OP stated he noticed it that long ago--but hey with those pics it's hard to tell. I just can't remember the last time I saw a carpintis in a pet store that didn't have lymph! :(

I have had a few cyanos and cichlids in general with lymph but I saw something pop up similar to pic in op on one of my cyanos and it spread very rapidly to almost all fish in tank. Lost almost my entire stock. Hexamita fit most of symptoms other than HITH and lat line erosion. I would do water change and salt anyway. Hopefully you are right.

Fish disease treatment among hobbyists like us is still in its infancy and no matter how experienced or knowledgable you are, it's still a fair amount of guess work and throwing crap to see what sticks.

Your nitrates can't be zero, but for arguments sake let's assume they are low (under 20ppm). Try to recheck the perameters. Do this for now, remove the fish and put a drop of Iodine (betadine) or Methylene blue if you have it on the spot, make sure to stay away from the gills. It will look much worse before it gets better in about 3-4 days. Monitor the fish for any additional sores that may or may not erupt. If you see any more sores or other abnormal symptoms let us know and we will go from there. Keep the water very clean.

Thanks for the help everyone. I want to answer some of the questions you guys had for me. I feed my Carpintis: Hikari Cichlid Gold, Hikari Cichlid Bio Gold Plus, and Tetra Freeze Dried Krill. I do 50% water changes every two weeks (which I feel is total over kill for a 5 inch Carpintis in 180 gallon that has two Ehiem 2217 filters and a Rena XP3 filter, but I do it anyway). I use stress coat to treat my water. I have not added any type of chemical to the tank and this white growth under his scales is localized to just that one area on his side. Other then this growth the Carpintis looks and acts perfectly and he eats like a pig. Today the white growth looks the same. If anyone out there has anything else to ask me about please do. All advise is welcome.
