I don't know why he is doing this, I just know he usually doesn't. I went to feed them today and he looks like he is gasping for air??? None of the other fish in the tank are doing this.

Tank mates, another FM, JD, 2 gold sevs, a midas?, and RD? and a ropefish.

There are no signs of any damage to him, from fighting or anything like that, no marks or anything.l

Is something wrong? Anything I can do to help him? He is my fav of my FMs and I don't want to loose him. Up till now he has acted normal.

If he is the only fish 'gasping' for air, then it probably isnt an aeration problem. Consider that he may be damaged phycologically from the bigger and bader fish. Keep a close eye on him and update as needed.

The only fish bigger then him are the 2 Gold Sevs, they are new and pretty much stay in the driftwood and rocks right now. Beside them he is the biggest in the tank.
I haven't seen any fighting at all.

Oh, I forgot to add that I have 2 HOBs both with 2 bio-wheels.

Despite being smaller then other fish, Red Devils/Midas can still open up a can of woop ass when your not looking. Firemouths dont really have the mouth or mental state to seriously fight back anyway.

Do you think he will be ok though??? Maybe just stressed atm???

I agree with mystix. How much do you have in the tank for hiding places? If the fm is the biggest in the tank, then he's probably gonna be on the devil/midas' list for one the first to knock off.

Your nitrates are a 10?
Is he the smallest fish?
If so possible nitrate poisoning - the nitrates will replace oxygen when binding to red blood cells. The fish could be in perfectly aerated water and still be suffering from a lack of oxygen. Also if he is the smallest fish, it will affect him first and also the worst. Check to see if the others are not breathing normally. Perhaps drop the temperature a couple of degrees (but not too low) to increase oxygen saturation.

Definitely not Nitrate poisoning.
