When we bought him, the previous owner referred to him as a Nile Bichir but we keep thinking that he has closer markings to an Ansorgii.. We aren't sure. Does anyone know what he really is? And how large he will get? Right now, he is a little over a foot in length and not very thick.

definately not a nile bichir (polypterus bichir bichir). It does look like an ansorgii hybrid .

Thank you both.

Do either one of you know how large he might get? We are nervous about keeping him in a tank with some big predators but we were hoping he would get big enough to keep out of the dinner menu without us having to move him to a different tank

Kind of a large predator community tank. Currently there are a few in there that will be upgrading but right now there is peacock bass, clown knife, fire eel, gredn terror, and some catfish with him

yeah he should be fine. I don't really see any problems with it

Unless you have like a TSN or an RTC i bet youll be fine, those guys can swallow surprisingly big fish. what kind of cats? and yeah i concur w/ the endlixansorgii for sure, doesnt quite look pure ansorgii. It should get pretty thick and will be able to take care of itself though, probably like 20 inch full grown
