Had a bala die today. Around his mouth was red and going back to his gills. Today had some cotton looking spots on him. I seperated him from the rest of my tank. The rest of my tank looks good but worried. Other balas are acting kind of funny now. Are they depressed or coming down with somthing? Did the one pop his nose and just start going. Tech stuff 55 gal tank 3 balas at 4", one gourami at 4, 5 zebra danios, 4 octos, and one clown pleco. Wife will not let me put up 120 gal up until Christmas. Than 240 up summer. Side bar three nights ago temp droped four degrees. Oh this started about 5 days ago.

The white spots sound like ich. The redness comes in later stages of ich.

Are you keeping up with water changes? I would medicate the tank for 10-14 days and raise the water temperature. I would also do more water changes.

Hey Nick, the ich. That is how I brought them home from Pet #$%%$.. Treated that with API super ich cure. Did a heck of a job. That was a couple months back. Knowing that Bala's can easily get ich I keep a constant look out for it. Instead of spots it was like more cotton looking. Water changes go like this. Water change filter change week one week two vacum week three water change week four water change new filter so on and so forth. The spots were on the front of his snout. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Bala sharks can be very skittish. They sometimes will knock themselfs out darting around in a panic. I've keep several of them and had them do this many times. Usually they recover. But they can get eye injuries nose injuries or just loose scales. I suspect possible injury without seeing it from what you describe. As mentioned injury then infection.
