I picked up a couple of Rotkeils from a very good local source but I'm wondering if they were misidentified coming to him. I picked them off his distributor list labeled as "redhead severums" but I can't get an accurate ID by looking at the bar count. Maybe an expert can chime in. Sorry the photos aren't good they are very small and skittish still.sevbars1.JPG sevbars2.JPG

I'll also have to get better pictures of the bigger one when his bars are showing more. They are definitely not from the same spawn as he is about 3 times bigger than the small one.

That's what I thought but I'm not sure if you're supposed to count the one through the head or not.

The hardest ones to spot you can assume. One will go through the eyes, one through the gills, and one as the base of the tail. These are easier to see the more stressed the fish are.

So basically these are probably common green severums?

These are what is identified as h. Efaciatus. It's a genus that needs a lot of love. 9 bars means that you don't have rotkiel or inirida. Once it grows out it may be easier to tell, but if you are pulling straws h. Efaciatus would be the most likely.

I guess only time will tell. Just out of curiosity are their any varieties currently classified Efaciatus that do have a red head or similar appearance? I never confirmed these to be "Rotkeils" just the distributors list said "red head severus" to be exact so I made the assumption being that rotkeils are sometimes called redheads.

Liberifers have a red body, rotkiel have been sold having 8 and 9 bars. That and any egg laying severum can interbreed, and they've been in the trade for longer than my life. As long as your happy with it l, that's what important haha.
