My new cichla (only a few days of having it) has an expanding lesion close to its vent and anal fin. I have no idea what it is. It seemed like a minor abrasion at first but it is now expanding across the underside all the way to the other side of the fish. The ph is a little above 7.5 and the hardness is 165mg/l of CaCO3. The lesion looks like this http://i348.photobucket.com/albums/q350/CichlidDan/IMG_1977.jpg What is it and what should I do to treat it. Please disregard my replies to my id thread as this pretty much sums it up.

i'd get some mela/pima fix.

yep, i'm on board with that.. Melafix or Pimafix, raise the temp. remove the carbon from the filter, add air stones and/or a foam filter.

i'm not a big fan of chemicals or putting tons of meds in the water.

wow!!! yeah.....bump the temp to 82 to 85 and add more air stones and melafix. but try salt first.

The temp on the aquarium has been at 86 and salted with aquarium salt at 1 tblspn per 5 gallons ever since I got him since I was just finishing off ich treatment. I adjusted him to this very slowly and he did ok. Should I just keep it at 86 and keep salt in at that concentration because I was gonna turn it back down and start removing salt because I haven't seen the ich in well over 4-5days. And will those medications harm the biological filter because I don't want him under any more stress he is already under. Since he will only eat live fish at the moment and I do not have any feeders quarantined would it be ok to temporarily feed him rosy reds or something from the pets store or what should I do about that?

you can take the salt out now...just keep the temperature stable high...just leave it at 86 degrees. And no it would not harm your biological filtration. Well for feeders...its risky to not quarentine them for a couple of weeks...but i suggest you try finding some Frozen Bloodworms as an alternative. But if it can't be help you can give them roseys...but your still risking your lil guys with dieseases the feeders may be carrying.

He did try the bloodworms once. I guess I can keep trying... so it would be much better if I got another right, i don't think I will get another from the store I got this one as he is already got an illness I have to treat and they charged like $80 for the fish. Another problem is how insanely scared he is of people, I dunno if this means he actually was wild caught like they told me and he hides when anyone goes near. At like 7" I am not sure where I will get another one as they are fairly hard to come by here, do you guys know of any vendors that will ship to Canada?

there is a vendor on aquabid that is in Canada.. don't know if they are any good or not or are selling healthy fish.. but i see his shipping is out of this world for shipping into the US.. AquaBid.com - Your Aquatic Auction Website shows they are selling "cichlasoma temensis (peacock bass)".. so they play fast and loose with the names of the fish?

Well everything seems much better today, he decided he would try the bloodworms and got plenty of them (even trying to steal them from the oscar's mouth) and I gave him some turkey heart cichlid delight stuff, which he also ate in a hurry. His wound has also stopped expanding ans is looking much better today, thanks everyone for the great advice. Also do you guys think it would be ok to get some earthworms from the baitshop and try feeding them to him?
