my friend and i set up a 125 saltwater with a 55 gallon sump that is about half full. this morning i got a frantic call of him saying he can't even see through the tank because it is so green. the fish are not liking it he says.
last night he added 5 gallons of lava rack into the sump as bio media and but in a glass rock that was siliconed to a piece of acrylic that he suspects was not fully cured, though left for 6 weeks.the sand is that white home depot stuff that comes in 100 lb bags for 8 bucks. and on the bottom of the tank large black spotches are present which i would imagine are hydrogen sulfide.
my thoughts were that the sandbed does little filtration and has been continuously overloaded, he does have a tendency to overfeed, so it has finally just exploded. our game plan is to switch the sand for live sand, do a %50 water change, run carbon, andkeep the lights off. and of course the fish will be moved to another tank for all this.
any help would be great, thanks.

It sounds like a huge phosphate rise and silica rise as well I would test immediately remove the lava rock at once move any fish to another tank and try to address one issue at a time and be patient it is a pain but you'll learn alot about your system this way.

Yup...to be honest, i would start the tank agian...move the fish to a holding tank, strip out the tank..new aragonite sandbed...scrub / clean the live rock...cycle the tank....get rid of the glass rock...get rid of the lava rock...use proper live rock rubble for th sump bio-media...

all i new was what he told me over the phone, so thats what i was able to post. i went over last night and we replaced the sand with live aragonite sand. the old sand was too fine and creating an anaerobic environment where hydrogen sulfide was produced like i suspected, and it smelled like rotten eggs. i came to the conclusion that what set it off was him stirring up the sand to get the glass rock and plexiglass plate to the bottom and releasing everything that happened to be burried. we replaced 125 gallons only leaving the sump full, 20 gallons or so, and got areration going on it. the cinder is staying as the bio because i know it caused none or very little little of the problem, and it is almost free compared to lr.
fish are back in this morning becuase we didn't have much of a choice and they are doing very well. wish us luck for the future.
thanks guys for the feedback

Sorry buddy
you might as well start over.
In Saltwater you can't take short cuts or you will pay dearly in the end..
Get real argonite sand and cure you live rock properly ..
Don't over stock and or over feed..

you can take big shortcuts, just not that one. that @#$%^%$ sand ruined everything.

Did you also get the lava rock at home depot? It may be a stupid point to bring up but are you sure there were no additives in the lava rock you purchased?? Especially some of the seasoned stone for barbecue pits.

good idea capo, i know the stuff youre thinking about, but no, its from a construction company and normally used for landscaping. the decorative rocks are from a lava bed.

ok going from memory from a discussion 2 years ago about it in saltwater,

the nutrients/minerals in real lava rock are highly variable. and are definitely recommended against for saltwater, probably fresh too. it can leach alot of nasty stuff.

man made lava rock is supposed to be better and purer but your still advised against it.

what kind of stuff? can you give a link to the discussion?
i've used it for years and learned about it from a guy whos been using it for over 50 years, he says, and swears by it. it is the bio for my reef and is covered in uncrusting dusters and sponges, i also use it to make live rock that turns out great.
i would imagine if it was new, geologically speaking, it would be filled with nasty stuff but as far as i know it is nurtral.
i would like to read up about it if there are negatives though,
thanks
