This red spot just randomly showed up on my ornate bichir, and I have no idea what it is or where its from. Hes acting really lethargic and I really don't want to lose him. I took him out of my dispay tank in concern to him spreading somthing to my other fish. Ive had him for prolly, 6 monthes and have never had a problem. The tank he lives in is a 265 with 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and 5-15 nitrate. Hes in a 55g temp tank now.

Thanks in advance

Has it remained the same? No other developing red patches? I suspected bacterial infection on this one. It's what the red patches normally are. Has this fish been injured or infested with parasites before?

Here's Anne's own polypterid reference for this particular issue.

To my knowledge he hasnt been injured or infested with parasites. There are no more red patches and it has remained the same, hes still acting really lethargic.

Btw thanks, I completely forgot about that thread and when I used the search function it didn't show up.

I wonder if flukes are involved because flukes cannot be seen without a microscope and they're more prevalent than we often thought. Do you have praziquantel? Have they been treated with prazi before?

Anne's post is a sticky thread.

Either Prazipro or Droncit will do. Just make sure you are using pure prazi. Use this method.

  • Remove carbon.
  • Add 2.5 milligrams per liter of water.
  • If you are using the powdered version, it is difficult to dissolve. Predissolve in tank water by shaking it up in a small container.
  • Dosing
Day 1 -- remove carbon, perform water change with vacuuming, and add Prazi to tank
    Day 2 -- add Prazi
    Day 3 -- do nothing
    Day 4 -- do nothing
    Day 5 -- do nothing
    Day 6 -- add Prazi
    Day 7 -- add Prazi
Day 8 -- normal partial water change with vacuuming
Day 14 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 21 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 28 - normal partial water change, then add prazi
Day 35 - normal partial water change, add carbon, treatment is complete

Will do.
