I know its sad but I currently have an oscar in a 10g. My friend just gave me a 40g that he was using as a lizzard tank. However is was designed to be used as a fish tank so it should be able to hold the water (I currently have it on my porch testing it to make sure). The only problem is that somebody warned me that there may be contamination from salmonella. I really need to use this tank. How can I clean the tank to make sure it is safe without using chemicals that could harm my fish?

P.S.~ My friend bought the tank brand new and says that he never used chemicals to clean it so that should not be an issue.

Thanks in advance

Hot water and vinegar is it, no chemicals. Just scrub it out good, it'll be fine. better than the current set up anyways, BTW 40G still won't be big enough for a fully grown oscar FYI.

salmonella is a problem for humans when food is eaten that becomes infected. Not fish from a dirty fish tank, if youre worried, add chlorine bleach, to the water circulate it around for awhile, then dump and rinse well, all the chlorine would have gassed off in a couple of days anyway. But if youre still afraid send the tank to me, i could always use another good tank :)
Salmonella is also a concern when certain semi aquatic reptiles are kept in unhealthy conditions. It is why in this town small turtles are not to be sold in stores as pets. The whole turtle thing might or might not be a real and serious salmonella threat but something along that line is probably what the OP is referring to.

Id just rinse it out real good. I have a 29g that used to be a rat cage. Didnt do an extensive cleaning and have had no issues.

Rinse it out, make sure its water tight and go.

Then start looking for a bigger tank as a 40 isn't going to last you very long with an oscar. You will need at least a 70.

I know the 40 isn't big enough but its all i have room for now. once summer comes around i will be moving and plan on getting a bigger tank. he is only about 6 months/inches now so i think it will be ok till then. Or do you think i need to get one sooner?

zjc5019:

With your Oscar on a regular feeding schedule of twice a day, your Oscar will grow on the average of 1 to 1.5 inches a month, until it becomes 12 inches or so long. Then his growth rate will slow down, but will continue to grow over time.

I had two Oscar's (a Tiger and an Albino). I purchased them at the same time when they were 1.5 inches long. Within 14 months they both were 18 inches long. So if your Oscar is 6 inches now and this being the second week of December, come May or June you're going to need a much needed larger tank for your Oscar, for certain. If you do not, the 40 gallon may stunt his growth. In comparrison, it would be like trying to stuff a gnome into a one gallon pickle jar. But that's a decission you will have to decide upon. I hope you find this information useful and I hope your Oscar brings you much happiness and joy in the months to come. Good luck. ~David
