Hey guys, I just bought a tiger fish datnoid a few days ago. Currently I am keeping him alone. When the lights are on he always stays at a corner and only move when the lights are off. What do you think I should do? Should I get a another fish to keep with it or should I leave him or just turn off the lights?

I´ll start be saying that I am a recent dat keeper.

Having said that, as getting to your Q, I´ll say that your dat will take time to adjust to light. They usually prefer a dim light.
You have two options: keep turning on the lights and be patiente (sooner or later he will adapt) or use a very dim light or no light at all and see him more, more quickly.
I only feed with the lights on so mine associate light with food and most of them are getting more confident and are out more and more (specially the AT´s). But a few IT´s still remain hidden and just "dart" out of their hidding places to grab some food and then go back.

As regards (which) tankmates, depends on the size of your tank.
Some dither fish may help to bring him out more: you may choose tinfoil barbs, or a flagtail if you want to keep them afterwards and the tank is big enough or tiger barbs if you have a smaller tank and don´t mind they eventually become food.

Thanks for the info. I just bought 2 tinfoil barbs. I actually feed him live feeders that I put into the tank in the morning. So how should I do it turn on the lights when I am just about to put them in?

I actually don´t feed live food. Only prawns, mussels and pellets (massivore). After up to a few weeks all the 14 dats started eating massivore (some in the first days). But they are small so it´s easier.

My lights take 2 hours to be full on and another 2hrs to be full off. They go on at 14h00 and start going off at 20h00 (so they´re at 100% between 16h00 and 20h00). But I have plants so I need this photoperiod, that probably will be increased by an hour or two next weeks.
I usually feed at around 20h00-20h30 during the week (when I arrive home) and at mid afternoon on the weekends, so always with the lights on.

I would say to have the lights on a regular photoperiod (using a timer or so) and feed when it´s most convenient for you (as long as the lights are on).

By the way, which one of the tigerfish do you have?... I don't recall seeing a mention of that.

Cool, get us a picture when you can.

Just so you know dats are nocturnal by nature and thats why they do that when the lights are on. Some get use to the lights and some will always hate them and act the way yours is.

That's interesting and I don't recall ever reading or hearing about this before.... I actually don't even have a light on my dat growout tank and one of them is stable most of the time and the other seems to be on it's way to becoming stable.
