Hey guys.

I have a 45L tank with just a pair of breeding bristlenose in it. Is heated at about 25 degrees celcius, and currently has around 30+ babies in it ranging from a month old to maybe 3 months old.

Recently I have had a few dying off and noticed some sort of flesh eating disease going on. The fish have open wounds that are white and it basically eats away at them till they die. I have seen fungal diseases in goldfish and this does not appear to be a fuzzy/furry growth but more of a fleshy issue. I must also add that it only seems to be happening to one fish at a time. The parents and 99% of the babies look and behave normally all of the time.

I have not tested my water as I do not have a test kit. I regularly change around 10% of the water weelky and nothing has changed at all, the fish have been surviving perfectly for the previous few months. The tank has been established for maybe 4 months.

I have a white spot medication here ( Formaldehyde + malachite green) that I have not used but I am currently using MELAFIX daily as indicated on the bottle

Could a build up of amonia be causing this? I plan on getting the water tested, but in the meantime can anyone offer any advice.

Start doing big water changes, start with a 50% and then do 25% every other day. Would need pics to ID exactly what is going on, but sounds like it could be ammonia or a bacterial infection. Some fry die off is normal in any breeding project, but it sounds like you might have other issues. BTW, what are you using for water conditioning? Also, get a test kit. ;)

When in doubt, water changes almost always help. I had a tank outbreak earlier this year during a very busy time and lost some fish. The day I started the W/C I had 2 plecos with white fungus/rot that are doing fine now but I did 3 W/C that week to help clean the water.
